Nerd Fest 2012: Part 2

web_4.15.2012_Spurlock

Earlier this week I came across information about a screening of Morgan Spurlock's latest doco, Comicon Episode IV: A Fan's Hope (watch the trailer), followed by Q&A with Spurlock himself. The Coolidge may not be local to us, but it's a great theater and we were more than happy to make the trek out there for this one! After all, our first date was a (super romantic!) Spurlock doco. And this one is about NERDS. It was like we had no choice but to go.

"Now ponder"

Leyre, Lana, Amy and I headed over to the MFA for girls night because there were two photography exhibits. The Yousouf Karsh exhibit and one with a number of photogs which also had a few Herb Ritts pictures in the mix. Mom took me to the MFA in '97 to see Herb Ritts' exhibit Work, and it made me want to be a photographer.  She also took me to see an exhibit (but I can't remember when) of Karsh's portraits, and it made me want to be a portrait photographer.  If I'm ever able to produce portraits half as good as Karsh's, I'll be happy.

As You Like It

Kali and I went to see Shakespeare on the Common and the very talented and hilarious Paul (see below). It was an awesome time.

Notes for next year:
1. Show up more than 1.5 hours prior to show (2-2.5 is probably best - so bring cards, cribbage boards, etc...)
2. Bring at least the following for sustenance: Brie, wine, bread, grapes, strawberries, hummus, chocolate, prosciutto.
3. Don't wait until the last night to go!
4. Invest in a low to the ground beach chair.
5. Invest in a pretty picnic basket.

Went out to an alumni event at the Commander's Mansion tonight. I got there early, so I headed out into the overcast, slightly wet evening to take some photos and explore the grounds a bit. They have this awesome trellis (is it still called a trellis if it's a free standing structure? I have no idea) with grapes growing over it. I think it would be a totally fun spot for portraits.

Operatunity

Leyre and I went to see Andrea perform tonight - she was in an abbreviated performance of The Magic Flute put on by Operatunity.

Missy

A bunch of us went to see Missy Higgins at the Paradise (more on that here) to celebrate Ros' birthday. It was a really awesome night. It was very difficult to get pictures, and I had a 15 minute debate with myself in the morning about what camera to bring, because I knew that I could get some awesome photos with my Nikon, but I wasn't sure about carrying a big bag with it into the club. In the end I brought my PHD* Canon, and I got a few decent shots. I like this one because you actually get the feeling of how people were standing rapt listening to her. I also love how the lighting reflected off people's eyes and made them look like zombies. Click to enlarge.

*My high school photog teacher, Mr Berube, use to refer to point and shoot cameras as PHDs - short for "push here dummy". I know that PnS is the more common short hand for it, but PHD makes me laugh, so I use it. Maybe one day it will take the photo community by storm and I'll have to remember to give all credit to Mr Berube.

The Snow Ball: Part Two

You may call this cheating, but I call it "thinking of the idea before you did, and now your jealous" - this picture was taken after midnight, so I can use it for Saturday! Good thing, because I was so hung over I hardly moved all day, and most certainly wasn't up and taking photos. Anyway, I have no idea who that guy is, or if Ros even knows him, or why she's pointing at the ceiling in this photo. But I saw it when I transferred my photos this morning, and it made me laugh.

The Snow Ball

We went to The Snow Ball and had a ton of fun (and a ton of champagne...oh, the hang over!). There was a little bit of gambling (for charity, of course) and a lot of dancing...fun times!

Gran Fiesta

Ed is supporting Whit's South Beach efforts. He said that he, too, would only have one spoonful of chocolate mousse for dessert.

This is what Pete & I look like...

...at a Willie Nelson concert. If only he had sold out, then the seats behind us would have been full and I wouldn't have been so chilly from the breeze off the water.

Best seat in the house

I was at the Sox game last night, in the suite. This is the best part (aside from the free food/beer/wine...) - the HDTV in the suite bathroom so you never miss a play, hardly wait in line, and don't have to worry about how dirty it might be.

I've made it to 5 free games both last year and this year, let's hope I can keep this up next year, as well! I sucked it up and bought a sweatshirt last night because it was windy, and the wind was blowing the rain/mist straight at us for a bit last night. I decided that for the at least $1,000 worth of seats I've gotten tickets for in the last two years, I could spring for the (redonkulous) $75 cost of an "officially licensed" sweatshirt.

Pretty

We got to watch pretty sunset/cloud views while we were at the Boston Landmarks Orchestra concert tonight.

Untamed

Pete and I filmed an Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event by our friends at Full Force Productions tonight. I had fun, mostly because the few knockouts that happened were not nearly as scary as the first one I ever saw. There were a few good fights, and (for anyone that follows MMA/Ultimate Fighter) they had Kenny Florian, Joe Lauzon, and one of the coaches from the show there.

It's for kids with cancer!

Elizabeth and I stopped at the Scooper Bowl on the way home from work today and ate up as much ice cream as we could! It ended up being only three scoops, because they were closing up and running out of ice cream, but we were happy with our three scoops...even if I had been hoping to get a full 7 in so that I would only be paying $1/scoop like last year! ;)
